Working with Managers of a Long-Stay Servicek and I came to see my task in this consultation role as essentially thinking and offering understanding about the anxieties, conscious and unconscious, which the manager and her deputy had to manage: the staff’s, the patients’, the relatives’ and their own.

Open-Ended Counselling with the Elderlyhe long-stay hospital. The chapter illustrates some of the issues which emerged from a longer therapeutic contact, especially feelings about ageing and the inevitability of death. I think these elderly people sought counselling because the awareness of death made it urgent to sort out some difficult emotional issues before they died.

identified with an aspect of my elderly patients: because of their physical and mental decline and current social attitudes towards the elderly, their experience and wisdom can be overlooked, though at the same time these personal resources enable elderly patients to endure what would otherwise be unendurable.
