High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC)-techniques are preferred, as quaternary ammonium compounds are very sensitive to decom-positon upon injection in GC.

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-476-05150-9 has been known for sometime that the L form shows a 50 to 500 fold greater activity than the D form. Furthermore the work of Nelson and Burke demonstrated that some of the metabolites of the D form showed signs of toxicity. In view of these findings, there has been a natural interest in the resolution of these drugs and their metabolities.
