The Step Before the Application of Fracture Mechanics to Fatigueation region can be treated by fracture mechanics methods. The Weibull theory is used to describe the scatter of crack initiation life and allows to consider the size effect. Test results from random loaded specimens show good agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Although a large number of fracture hypotheses exist, these partly lead to contradictory fracture predictions. The experimental investigations of the Mixed Mode problems, which have been carried out until now, have not been sufficient to obtain greater clarity. Additional experiments will therefore be required.
