Dr. Victor A. McKusick and the Genetics of Dwarfism,t that “achondroplastic dwarfism” was unusually frequent in that population. Because achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder with more than 80% of cases arising as a result of new mutations, McKusick postulated that the skeletal dysplasia in the Amish was another condition inherited as an autosomal recessive trait.

In some ways, McKusick has been regarded as embodying the history of medical genetics through being himself, rather than through his specific contributions.

Victor McKusick,g through the “Bar Harbor” courses, he contributed greatly to the study of inbreeding in the Amish, nosology of disease, human gene mapping, and the Human Genome Organization. He performed an outstanding service by bringing genetics into the mainstream of medicine.
