Adhesion of leukocytes from flow: The selectins and their ligands,ls range from 1 to 10 mm/s, allowing for blood transit times on the order of 0.1 to 0.01 s for a 100 μm segment of venule. This time interval is too short to ensure activation and attachment of leukocytes suspended in the flowing blood.

Co-operative signaling between leukocytes and endothelium mediating firm attachment,ll possible signaling steps in the cascade of events leading to stable adhesion (though signaling pathways will not be discussed). Quantification and imaging of vascular adhesion molecule expression in inflammatory diseases ,,vide possible targets . Molecular probes to these might be clinically useful for imaging inflammation and provide more readily interpretable information than that supplied by existing techniques . In this chapter we describe our experience evaluating E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) for this purpose.
