Inorganic Complexes of the Rare Earthsxamples, the sulfato and nitrato complexes are discussed in more detail. The role of water molecules as ligands and hydrogen bond donors is included in the discussion. Although solid state structure and properties are emphasized, a brief comparison to results obtained in solution is also made.

Optical Spectroscopy of Lanthanides in Crystalline Matrixe crystal field spectra in imperfect crystals are discussed. Intensities and linewidth are considered. The spectroscopy of solids employing lasers is described followed by the consideration of hyperfine interactions, energy transfer and glasses contains RE’s. Finally divalent RE ions and magnetic interactions are mentioned briefly.

Summary and Future Trends in Lanthanidesrage, for magnets and for solid-state lasers. The lanthanide metals will be used more widely for the purification of metals by removal of oxygen, sulfur, and other non-metals. However, their most important application will be in adding to our fundamental understanding of all materials.
