A Taxonomy of Non-linguistic Symbol Systems,by combining the arms of the husband and wife; whereas in kamon marriage was not represented at all. This underscores a central theme of the book: syntax and complex structure in a symbol system does not mean that the symbol system in question encodes language, but depends instead on the kind of information the system is used to represent.

The topic of structure in non-linguistic symbol systems will figure prominently in this book as there is a widespread fallacy that structure in a symbol system means that the symbol system represents language, a notion that we hope to quash.
