The Spine, first described by Garrod (1890). Medullary compression from atlantoaxial subluxation was first described by Davis and Markley (1954). In ankylosing spondylitis the problem is diffuse stiffening with kyphosis rather than instability although cervical subluxation may occasionally occur.
