Size-press impregnation of such papers with starch is typical of normal surface modification and gives as an end result a paper surprisingly tolerant of older printing techniques, such as lithography and dot matrix printing: so-called ‘impact’ printing.

Surface sizing,y referred to as printability, gluability and runnability may also be important in some applications. A better expression than surface size in these circumstances is surface modifier or surface enhancer.
