Summary, (X1, X2, and M1, M2) and old (X3 and M3) fields. Many characteristics have not changed unidirectionally during the whole period under consideration. Despite that, such concentrated information gives a good overview of the succession studied, and of the contents of this book as well.

Most historical controversies (like individualistic vs. organismal concepts of plant communities) may be viewed as approaches emphasizing a particular hierarchical level. In our study, we combine the population-community approach and the functional ecosystem approach, as defined by O’Neil et al. 1986.
