The Present Value of Tennyson poems into documents. I agree with Alfred Tennyson in yearning for the days ‘Before the Love of Letters, overdone/Had swampt the sacred poets with themselves’ (R 1321, 11 13–14). The ideal condition for a reader is that of a child listening to a story, who cares everything about what is in the story, and nothing about who wrote it.

Charles Tennyson: Writer and Scholar can think of few men who were less so—but his personality was so vivid that it inevitably suffused everything he wrote. What I have to write therefore will be as concerned with the man as with his works, but to me they seem indivisible.
