Early Cape Societies,Reading, writing and arithmetic were unknown in Africa south of Islam and the Sahara before the coming of empire-builders and their offshoots, the colonial settlers. To find out what kind of people lived at an earlier period in the subcontinent we must look at the discoveries of archaeologists and antiquarians.
