Preliminary Stress Measurements in Central California Using the Hydraulic Fracturing Technique,rection of maximum compression appears to be about N 15° E. The rock in the Menlo Park well is too highly fractured to yield a reliable measurement of the horizontal stresses. The data indicate, however, that the least principal stress is vertical (due to the overburden weight) to a depth of 250 m.

The Relationship Between , Strain Relaxation and Outcrop Fractures in the Potsdam Sandstone, Alexane complicated fracture patterns have lower recoverable strains. Strain relaxation was lowest next to a postglacial pop-up. The orientation of the pop-up indicated relief of an ENE directed compression, the direction also observed as the maximum expansion at the outcrop yielding the largest strain relaxation.

On Correlation Between Seismic Velocity Anisotropy and Stresses ,,velocities coincide with the largest and smallest horizontal stresses, respectively. These results suggest that the direction and magnitude of stresses in potential mining areas could be estimated from velocity anisotropies observed in seismic prospecting of the area.

Simultaneous Monitoring of Stress and Strain in Massive Rock,mpared with simultaneous strain measurements (for which a capacitance strain sensor is used) to examine the mechanisms of large scale stress relief processes. Characteristic stress relief cycles (of magnitude 200–3000 kPa) are found to migrate through the pillar as impressed loads are accommodated by the rock mass.

Central Europe: Active or Residual Tectonic Stresses,Rhinegraben rift system. The horizontal stresses exceed at nearly all places the vertical ones. Evidently the excess of horizontal stress is generated by active plate tectonics in the Alps. A tectonic model to explain the observed stress pattern is presented.

A Mechanism for Strain Relaxation of Barre Granite: Opening of Microfractures,the foliation of the metasediment. The lack of parallelism between the normal to the rift plane and the maximum expansion of the initial overcore suggests an externally applied strain superimposed on the strain caused by opening of microfractures.

Stress Distribution near Lake Jocassee, South Carolina,ormal faulting for deeper events (1–3 km) in the middle of the reservoir. The directions of the axes of maximum and minimum compression inferred from the CFPS were found to be NW and NE respectively and contrast with the NE and NW directions obtained by hydrofracture in a shallow well (230 m) at Bad Creek, about 10 km from the epicentral region.
