IntroductionRepresenting a real-life problem as a formally stated statistical problem is an essential stage of the statistician’s work. It is perhaps also the most difficult stage for there exist no formal rules on how to proceed. Handbooks on statistics deal mostly with typical problems while in practice we are faced with a variety of nontypical situations.

A scheme of a statistical problemsIn statistical investigations we aim at obtaining some information about the phenomenon which interests us by exploiting that information about it which is available. In Chapter 1 we have presented a formalism permitting a description of the available information; now we shall concentrate on a formal description of the required information.
