Syntactic Meanings,The problem of distinguishing ‘semantic’ and ‘pragmatic’ aspects of sentences has not yet been solved. One of the most suggestive lines of attack is based on the following idea: ‘semantic’ aspects are those which can be related to truth conditions, ‘pragmatic’ aspects are the ones that concern ‘conditions of use’.

Semantics and Pragmatics of Sentence Connectives in Natural Language,one can make it mean either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as he pleases? Can one in any sense talk about a fixed word meaning here? But if not, what is it Voltaire is telling us when he maintains that the diplomat’s uttering “yes” as well as the lady’s uttering “no” . ‘perhaps’?
