Outcomes in Special Economic Zones in AfricaAnecdotal evidence has shown that the success of SEZs in African economies is largely elusive and very few countries such as South Africa, Mauritius, Kenya, Madagascar and Ghana have been successful. Most zones in Africa have performed dismally due to poor design and management, corruption, poor location and infrastructure deficit.

Towards a New Generation of Special Economic ZonesAfrican economies, as they draw lessons from other successful economies, have a need to move towards a new generation of SEZs which respond to new challenges brought about by 4IR, the sustainable development imperative and sustainable development goals. In this regard, Africa must not copy and paste strategies from Asia.
