The Earth’s Exospheric Plasma with Some Comments on Eclipses as a Means of Studying the Ionospherech I have been concerned and which are described in more detail in a companion paper (Thomas and Rycroft, this volume). In addition, some general precursive comments are made on eclipses as a tool for exospheric and ionospheric plasma studies.

Direct Rocket Measurements of the Ionosphere during the Solar Eclipse of November 12,1966./cm. in the altitude range 65–78 km. The appropriate ion chemistry model was found to agree with that proposed by Fehsenfeld, et. al. below 60 km., but to diverge greatly from this model at higher altitudes.

Distribution of X-Ray Emission from the Sun Deduced from Measurements of Ionospheric Absorption flux were identified during this eclipse: one on the west limb, the second in the middle of the disk and the third on the east limb. Two sources of less importance were also identified on the north-east part of the disk.
