Observatories, these days of public accountability it makes good sense for them to “open” their doors to the public and provide us with information on their facilities and research. We can visit the great observatories of the past and read about the next generation ones, and all from the comfort of our armchair.

Virtual Sky Watching,which has over 9,000 stars down to magnitude 6.5. Next level up is the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) Catalogue with 250,000 stars to around magnitude 8. Some programs include the Hubble Guide Star Catalogue with 15 million stars to magnitude 15 — enough for most people!

The Accompanying CD-ROM,nce installed all you will need to do is double click on start.pdf located in the top directory of the CD-ROM (use explorer to do this). You can of course make a short-cut to simplify this and I would recommend doing so.

,Data Sources II — the Solar System: Planets, Asteroids and Comets,lated positions and properties of celestial bodies but to the uninitiated they hardly make for enjoyable bedtime reading! To be fair, for the professional or the serious amateur researcher these are still an essential resource but to the ordinary amateur there are now more user-friendly ways of getting the data we want.
