Sociology in Austria: Introduction,r academic world was not governed by meritocratic criteria but the effect of a ‘dynamic adaptation’ to new political regimes. Following an institutionalist point of view one had to take into account such discontinuities and pay tribute to episodes of de-institutionalization.

This intellectual blossoming contrasts heavily with the unfavorable conditions under which these works had to be produced. The universities did not support creative and innovative research, and also banned Leftists and Jews from climbing up inside academia.

A Missed Opportunity,oposal and wasted four years quarreling about who should profit from the American gift. In 1963 an institute opened which is still around: the Institute for Advanced Studies/ Institut für Höhere Studien (IHS).

Years of Reforms,s were appointed during these early days of institutionalizing sociology in Austria. Their selection followed less than meritocratic criteria, but they belonged to the subculture of the Roman Catholics.
