All infants were given intravenous nutrients as an attempt to increase the caloric intake above that usually achieved in infants of this weight. Associated clinical problems included pulmonary insufficiency of prematurity, recurrent apnea and necrotizing enterocolitis. No infant had respiratory distress syndrome.
