Phytotoxins as molecular signals seldom demonstrated. Essential conditions for attributing the function of disease determinants are: a) the demonstration that the toxin occurs in infected plants, b) the ability of the toxin to reproduce at least a portion of the syndrome when placed in a healthy plant.
