Proximity Sensors,resence of an object at a certain point in space. Alternative technologies such as laser ranging devices which could also be used for proximity sensing will not be discussed as these are covered in Chapter 3 (Distance Measurement) and are not in line with this chapter‘s theme of low cost object detection.

Tactile Sensors,g, or touch, has been the poor relation of vision, with the small proportion of work that has been undertaken in this field being restricted largely to academic institutions, with very few commercial products becoming available.

Lighting,k easy, whilst the wrong kind of lighting can make even a simple application impossible. It is ironic that lighting, which is the most important part of the system, is also the part that is least expensive, and yet at the same time it is often ignored until the later stages of installation.

Image Processing,d on an image that is to be viewed by a person rather than analysed by a machine. An example of this would be medical X-ray images that can often benefit from the enhancements offered by image processing.
