Group and semigroup theoretic considerations inspired by inverse problems of the additive number th the authors on these topics started in Kääriku, Estonia, in 1976, continued in Moscow, Russia, in 1977–1979, in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1984, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1985, and Tel-Aviv, Israel, in 1986. Relativized star-free expressions, first-order logic, and a concatenation game,expressions and first-order logic (over finite orderings), it is shown here that in the relativized version star-free expressions are strictly weaker than the corresponding first-order formulas. For the proof, a concatenation game is introduced which captures the expressive power of the relativized star-free expressions.
