VLTI Science Highlightss the interest for the technique from the astronomical community keeps growing more ambitious instrumental projects are contemplated which will definitely put optical/near-infrared interferometry into mainstream astrophysics. It is shown here how VTLI plays a leading role in all these aspects.

The Use of the VLTI for Studying the Asymmetric Mass Loss of Evolved Starsavorable location. These first results are promising for the second generation VLTI instruments, and an improved synergy with the new generation VLT instruments and ALMA is foreseen. The Paranal site would represent in this context a key facility for high spatial resolution studies of time-variable, spatially complex compact dusty sources.

Pushing FORS to the Limit—A New Population of Faint Extended Ly, Emitters at ,∼3an limit systems (LLS) to fainter surface brightness limits with observations performed in service mode in periods of bad seeing. For this purpose we have initiated a program of long-slit spectroscopy with FORS2 at the VLT to search for extended Ly. emission in a mostly blank field (LP 173.A-0440).
