Observation of Surface Activity on Cool Giants with the VLT InterferometerSurface activity can reveal crucial information on the processes which generate magnetic fields in the interior of cool giants. We discuss how the interferometric mode of VLT can be used to observe active regions directly on near-by stars, and we compare this approach with Doppler imaging.

Imaging the Surfaces of Late-Type StarsWe discuss the prospects for resolving the disks of red-giants and Mira variables with the VLT and the VLTI. We also describe infrared aperture-masking observations with the NTT, from which we have measured angular diameters of 50 mas for R Dor (M8 III) and 44mas for W Hya (Mira variable).
