Introduction and Overview,ally imposed probabilistic assumptions. By its very nature a sample-path argument is deterministic and therefore requires no probabilistic assumptions. By focusing attention on a particular sample path, we are in effect assuming that the behavior of the system over time is completely known to us; thus probabilistic arguments are irrelevant.

Sample-Path Stability,distribution of the state or the fraction of time spent in various states do not change over time. By contrast, in an unstable system such limits do not exist. More drastically, the state (e.g., the number of customers or work in a queueing system) can grow without bound when the system is unstable.
