Retrograde Evolution During Major Extinction Crises
BURSA

Evolutionary Trends During Periods of Relative Ecological Equilibrium,r example during the Permian Triassic or at the Cretaceous Tertiary boundary. These crises are framing periods of relative ecological equilibrium during which gradual, slow evolutionary trends lasting millions of years develop. These trends often start with “simple” organisms and end with much more “advanced” ones.

Retrograde Polymorphism in Some Planktonic Foraminifera,e to more complex forms with an involute and ornamented shell. Such a case was recently identified in the lineage . (Desmares et al. 2008). During the major Cenomanian oceanic anoxic event OAE2, the end forms of this lineage gave rise to a very simplified atavistic group which is a quasi homeomorph of its ticinellid ancestor.

Genetic Memory in the Evolution of Silicoflagellids, ancestral geometries (=atavisms) has been conducted on living Silicoflagellids (Chrysophytes) by Van Valkenburg and Norris in 1970. Such atavisms indicate that retrograde evolution is related to some genetic memory of the phylogenetical history of the group, recalling an Haeckelian reverse recapitulation.
