Resource Scheduling, scheduling techniques. Scheduling mechanisms are necessary for all resources used during the processing of continuous-media data. As discussed in Section 3.1 this work concentrates on the buffer space and CPU resources. Mechanisms for these will be described in this chapter. How the requirements can be determined will be discussed in Chapter 5.

Reduction of Resource Requirements, mined in Section 6.1 how buffer space requirements can be lowered and which gain can be reached by the discussed methods. Then, in Section 6.2, CPU scheduling mechanisms are described and evaluated which reduce contention situations among continuous-media processing entities.

Advanced Resource Management Techniques, continuous-media processing further. A model and an architecture which allow the reservation of resources in advance are presented in Section 7.1. Scaling mechanisms which can be applied if resource reservation is not possible or appropriate are discussed in Section 7.2.

Resource Management Principles, inuous media processing has to be able to cope with streams with data rates of several Mbit/s and provide timely processing guarantees, for instance such that it can synchronize audio and video streams up to a granularity of about 80 ms .
