It is officially abbreviated to “È”, an ancient name associated with the eastern part of the province since the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), while a popular, though unofficial, name for it is “Chu” after the powerful state of Chu that existed there during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (771–221 BC).
