Appendix: Decomposition with DifferencingIn this Appendix we derive the results on the decomposition of rates of change of a variable which depends on other variables. This is a generalisation of the method of logarithmic differentiation used in Chapter 4. We use this technique of differencing extensively in Chapter 5, and Sections III and IV.

CO2 Emissions by Germany and the UKA principal aim of this study is the establishment of policy scenarios concerning CO. emissions in Europe, particularly in Germany and the UK. To establish such scenarios for the future we need first to understand how CO. emissions have changed in the past.

Scenario SimulationsIn this chapter we shall formulate various scenarios for economic restructuring, for Germany and the UK, and assess the associated CO. emissions. The method we follow is an application of our basic input-output equation for CO. emissions, derived in Section 8.2.4; viz: ..

A ‘Minimum Disruption’ Approach to Scenario AnalysisIn the previous chapter we presented a number of scenarios of economic restructuring, with the assessment of the corresponding reductions in CO. emissions. However, although this approach is well-established, it faces two problems.
