The Optical Response of Semiconductors: An Overview,General concepts concerning the dielectric function of semiconductors are reviewed. The random phase approximation is derived and its limitations are discussed. A special attention is paid to the interference effects which can occur in different circumstances due to intrinsic properties or due to the heterogeneity of the investigated compound.
