Optical Switching in Chalcogenide Glasses,lpful to examine first the effects of linear and nonlinear absorption in a waveguide. In order to have an optical-switching operation, a pump or control pulse must produce a sufficiently large nonlinear phase shift. The integral of the intensity over the device length gives the total phase shift accumulated in the waveguide.
