Fertilizers and biological nitrogen fixation as sources of plant nutrients: Perspectives for futurenment is also a concern. Fertilizers, however, will remain a necessary and sustainable input to agriculture to feed the present and increasing human population. It is not a case of whether BNF is better or worse than mineral fertilizers because both plays an important role in agriculture.

Book 1997 is the nutrient that most frequently limits rice production. At current levels ofN use efficiency, we will require at least double the 10 million tons of N fertilizer that are currently used each year for rice production. Global agriculture now relies heavily on N fertilizers derived from petroleUI

Root morphogenesis in legumes and cereals and the effect of bacterial inoculation on root developmeoot outgrowths and lateral roots. Appropriate combinations of auxin, the nitrogen fixing ., and rice variety did give rise to some plants which grew slowly for over 12 months in a nitrogen-free medium.

Finally we discuss potential avenues for further research in this area and the prospects for achieving the ultimate goal of expressing active nitrogenase in cereal crops such as rice.

Chitin recognition in rice and legumes,ta support the idea that legumes may possess a second chitin binding receptor that shows a greater specificity for the lipo-chitin nodulation signals. The presence of this second receptor may be one of the key factors that distinguishes plants capable of nodulation by rhizobia (e.g., soybean) from those that cannot be nodulated (e.g., rice).
