A perfect farceransferring Del to another employer would have been an expedient solution to the whole crisis. By telling her new employer of the rape, Del had thrown a major spanner in a mechanism that probably had worked very successfully in similar cases. Ming’s unexpected refusal to let Del go certainly changed everything.

The ‘upshot’ was that Morley and Salvation Army officer Howard were going to call on Pettitt to ask for Del’s Nortown pass to be sent to Blackheath also and ‘to demand her money’. She told Ming that Morley had been ‘shelving’ the case so far.
