Characterisation of the shallow subsurface: implications for urban infrastructure and environmental erground environment, where many infrastructure and utilities elements are located, presents very difficult characterisation problems. Characterising the deeper subsurface is important for groundwater resource evaluations, environmental contamination assessments, and for some infrastructure applications such as underground storage facilities.
