Deep brain and cerebellar stimulation for spasticitytic use was only introduced in 1962. At that time Mazars implanted electrodes in the sensory thalamic nuclei for pain relief (Mazars et al. 1973) and Cooper in the same year described chronic cerebellar stimulation for motor movements disorders (Cooper 1973).
