Symbolic and Subsymbolic Approaches to Cognition describe a framework, due to Foster (1992), within which different methods for solving the same computational problem can be compared. I then demonstrate the use of this framework as applied to a specific example. I use this illustrative example to consider whether subsymbolic methods are merely implementations of symbolic ones.

The “Perceptual Magnet” Effect: A Model Based on Self-Organizing Feature Mapslity, and which can account for the perceptual magnet effect. Our model is based on a modification of the self-organizing feature map algorithm, and includes local variations of the adaptability. Numerical and analytical results for the model are given, together with a brief discussion of possible other domains of application for the model.
