Das James Webb Teleskop,Einige der Instrumente wurden erneuert aber ab einem gewissen Zeitpunkt ist das Instrument als Ganzes gesehen nicht mehr auf dem Stand der Technik. Dazu kommt der mit 2,4m doch eher kleine Spiegeldurchmesser. Es wurde also schon bald nach der Inbetriebnahme des Hubble Teleskops nach einem Nachfolgeprojekt sondiert.
