Introductionve, however, had the greatest detrimental influence on the country side, at least with respect to the area under study. These practices included reclamation of ‘waste’ areas during the 1920’s and 1930’s, and reallotment programmes after the Second World War.

The valley grassland vegetation (ii) how long does this take?, (iii) how do different substrates influence successional lines? Another question will also arise (iv) what are the successional lines with cutting regimes other than the July one e.g. hay-making twice, hay-making in September, cutting and mulching or even abandoning?
