Loss of Citizenshiptates to decide who is or becomes a citizen has as a corollary the right of states to decide who loses or retains citizenship. In this chapter I first survey rules regarding the voluntary and non-voluntary loss of citizenship in Europe and then flag those aspects that can be regarded as inspired by ethno-cultural understandings of membership.
