Introduction that the interplay is particularly foregrounded in the case of poetic texts. By analysing a number of short Japanese and English poems, I will argue against the dominant view of language that sees the linguistic sign as primarily non-iconic or arbitrary. This chapter offers an overview of the issues to be discussed in this study.
