Theories of Healthmental health. There is a whole spectrum of such theories. At one extreme we have naturalistic, biological, or scientific theories. A few of these theories purport to give us a value-neutral theory of disease and health. They often refer to human design or to normality of functions. Christopher Boorse is the major proponent of one such view.

Current Concepts of Positive Mental HealthIn this chapter I discuss Marie Jahoda’s classic study, ., published in 1958. The book is a summary of most of the views on mental health found in the relevant literature at the time, and it is therefore a great source when looking for different defining characteristics of mental health.

The Value of a Conceptual Analysis for Measuring Mental HealthIn the opening chapter of this book I mentioned two related areas where a conceptual analysis like this one can be of value. The first one has to do with the creation and evaluation of health-measuring instruments, and the second one with the creation and evaluation of instruments measuring psychotherapy outcome.
