Quintillian’s focus is pragmatic. He had little patience with pedantic details and strong views about matters of practical importance.

Montaignetion influenced both Descartes and Bacon who attempted to answer the sceptical arguments that Montaigne raised. Montaigne held that we acquire truth only by the grace of God. Reason cannot lead us to faith, but faith, tempered by tolerance, is a rational choice.
