On morphological criteria it was shown to be a virus with a highly complex structure related to the viruses of vesicular stomatitis and rabies . This finding has been confirmed by others .

Susceptibility to infection with Marburg virus varies considerably from host to host. In most systems the pathogenicity of the virus for a new host seems to increase gradually during several passages.
