The Art of Sinking in Prose: Charles Jackson, Joyce, and ,ment of its subject-matter, created in part no doubt by the movie. Lowry says in his letters that the book ‘nearly slaughtered’ him, because dipsomania had rarely, if at all, been ‘done properly’ before. The compliment is genuine, but also slightly backhanded because it tends to confirm this documentary reputation.
