Introduction,Sontag’s death is solemnised, rendered ethereal, elegiac, in this act of recall. Leibovitz’s images close in on her lover’s beautiful hands clasped over a necklace. The monochrome of these shots distracts from the bruising and damage apparent on Sontag’s arms.
