Chaos in nonlinear optical systems, via a nonlinear medium. Nonlinear couplings are provided by a J=1/2 to J=1/2 transition, a two-photon transition, and a second-order nonlinear susceptibility, respectively. A new type of period-doubling to chaos which occurs in the first of these models, and also in the Lorenz equations, will be described.
