Pharmako-und Gesundheitsökonomieesserten gesundheitlichen Versorgung der Bevölkerung angesehen. Derzeit liegen in den entwickelten Ländern die Ausgaben für das Gesundheitswesen jedoch bei 5–12% des Bruttosozialproduktes, mit steigender Tendenz. Allein in Deutschland beliefen sich 1999 die Ausgaben der Krankenkassen auf 256 Mrd. DM, eine Versiebenfachung seit 1970.
