Catacondensed Benzenoids,erived the connection between Fibonacci numbers and the number of Kekulé structures for single zigzag chains, and supplemented the treatment by group-theoretical considerations of symmetry. A treatise on three connections between Fibonacci numbers and Kekulé structures is due to Balaban and Tomescu (1984); see also Hosoya (1973).

Classes of Basic Benzenoids (IV): Rectangles,.5. Figure 1 shows R. (4,4) and R. (3,3), a 7-tier and a 5-tier regular strip, respectively. An intermediate system is identified as a non-regular 6-tier strip (see Fig. 1); it is an obvious non-Kekuléan.
