Growing Up in Oegstgeest, close to Leiden a few years later. Oort grew up there, attended elementary and secondary school in Leiden. He had a strong interest in exact sciences and went to Groningen to study physics or astronomy, to a large extent attracted by the fame of astronomer J.C. Kapteyn.

Via Yale to Leiden,s. In the end he stayed for two years, interrupted for a few months to complete his military service in the Netherlands. In 1924 he made an extensive tour of the USA, spending some time in Pasadena, California and Mount Wilson Observatory before returning to the Netherlands to start his appointment in Leiden.
